Book Blog Memes / Bookish Discussions

It’s Monday, August 10, 2015. What Are You Reading?

I wasn’t going to do this post today. I am not reading anything I haven’t already talked about in previous Monday posts and felt silly bringing up books I already claimed I was going to read and then put aside for one reason or another. But such is life and how I approach my reading moodiness. So here is the post anyway.

I read Bull Mountain last week and really enjoyed it. It’s a great, fast paced thriller and recommend picking it up if you like your thrillers somewhat of a combination of Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy. Yes, it’s dark and quite the ride.

Beneath the Bonfire: Stories   The Beautiful Bureaucrat

I finally, FINALLY, started Beneath the Bonfire by Nickolas Butler and it’s excellent! I think this short story collection will end up on my favorites this year. I just can’t seem to focus on anything other than it and so that’s a win for me.

I haven’t requested many ARCs this year but one that I did and loved is The Beautiful Bureaucrat by Helen Phillips. It releases tomorrow and have seen many reviews on the web this weekend and purposely have avoided reading them until I get my review finished. There is so much to dissect with this one and I stayed up ’til the wee hours last night frantically finishing it because I simply could not stop. It’s more of a creepy, intense read, if that makes sense. Not a typical thriller trope but one that has more building and eerie elements to it and another that will most likely end up on my favorites for the year. Can’t wait to ramble in my review this week!

Aside from Bonfire, I hope to tackle a large stack of books I took home from the library and instead of listing them all, I’ll keep you posted…

It’s Monday, what are you reading?

  1. Yay for Bonfire! Loved that book, and I’m not great with shorts. If I remember correctly, you haven’t read Shotgun Lovesongs yet, right? It’s also a good’un.
Will be anxious to hear your thoughts re TBB. I didn’t like it as much as most, but it was a page-turner!

  2. Wow! Based on some of my favorites of the year, you have just hit a trifecta!! Bull Mountain was one of my favorites of the summer, TBB is another favorite, and Bonfire is definitely on my Best of 2015 list and is the first short story collection I’ve ever loved (and I also love Shotgun Lovesongs if you haven’t read that yet).
