Flashback to 1993 for “Cannonball” by The Breeders

This blog post is in response to the amazing book I just read titled This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales.

It’s filled with amazing music references weaved throughout the story and picking just one song was difficult. So I decided to go with the theme of the title. I am not sure if The Breeder’s song “Cannonball” was the life-saving song for protagonist, Elise. But it is the first song she choose and played as a DJ (well, filling in for a minute) and you could feel the story shift.

Also, I LOVE Kim Deal. I am a huge fan of The Pixies and when she left them for a bit to be able to write some more of her own music, she started The Breeders in 1990. Their first album Pod was mentioned as Kurt Cobain’s “number 3 of the top 50 albums he thought were most influential to Nirvana’s sound in his journal in 1993.” (Wikipedia) They even opened for Nirvana on the European tour in 1992. Kim’s sister Kelley joined them, took over lead vocals and this song from their third album was electric, quirky, different and I instantly liked it.

Have a great weekend.
